Russia beats Netherlands in extra time to advance to Euro semifinals
BASEL, Jun. 21, 2008 (AMP) — Austria Swizerland 2008 : Russia reached the semifinals of the 2008 UEFA Euro courtesy of a 3-1 extra time victory over the Netherlands (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Saturday night at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.
The score was still 1-0 for Russia four minutes from the end of regulation time, when an unexpected goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy allowed the Netherlands to equalize and just squeeze through to overtime. The Russians finally broke through with goals from Torbinski ('112) and Arshavin ('116).
