Australia beats Tahiti in extra time to reach OFC Nations Cup final
AUCKLAND, Jul. 12, 2002 (AMP) — New Zealand 2002 : Australia reached the OFC Nations Cup final for the fourth time in their history courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over Tahiti (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Friday at the Ericsson Stadium in Auckland.
The score was still 1-0 for Tahiti two minutes from the end of regulation time, when an unexpected goal from Porter allowed Australia to equalize and just squeeze through to overtime. In the 96th minute, it was ultimately Mori who brought the Socceroos to victory by scoring the winning goal.
