Austria beats France in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
TURIN, May. 27, 1934 (AMP) — Italy 1934 : Austria qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1934 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 3-2 extra time victory over France (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Sunday afternoon at the Stadio Benito Mussolini in Turin.
The score was still 1-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Jean Nicolas ('18) for France and Matthias Sindelar ('44) for Austria, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. The Austrians finally broke through with goals from Schall ('93) and Bican ('109), while Verriest ('116 on penalty) scored for France.
