Italy beats Norway in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
MARSEILLE, Jun. 5, 1938 (AMP) — France 1938 : Italy qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1938 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over Norway (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Sunday afternoon at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille.
The score was still 1-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Pietro Ferraris ('2) for Italy and Arne Brustad ('83) for Norway, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 94th minute, it was ultimately the Italian striker Silvio Piola who brought the Azzurri to victory by scoring the winning goal.
