Cuba beats Romania to reach World Cup quarterfinals
TOULOUSE, Jun. 9, 1938 (AMP) — France 1938 : Cuba qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1938 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win against Romania (halftime: 0-1) on Thursday night at the Toulouse Stadium.
Romania had started off well by taking the lead in the 35th minute with a goal by forward Stefan Dobay. Trailing 1-0 at half time, the Cubans nonetheless manage to reverse the direction of the game by scoring twice in the second period (Socorro '51 and Fernández '57).
