Uruguay beats England to advance to World Cup semifinals
BASEL, Jun. 26, 1954 (AMP) — Switzerland 54 : Uruguay reached the semifinals of the 1954 FIFA World Cup with a 4-2 win against England (halftime: 2-1) on Saturday afternoon at the St. Jakob Stadium in Basel.
Uruguay dominated the first half thanks to goals from Borges ('5) and Varela ('39). Leading 2-1 at the break, the Uruguayans further widened their lead in the second period by scoring twice (Juan Alberto Schiaffino '46 and Ambrois '78).
