Germany beats Austria to reach World Cup final
BASEL, Jun. 30, 1954 (AMP) — Switzerland 54 : Germany reached the FIFA World Cup final for the very first time in their history with a 6-1 win against Austria (halftime: 1-0) on Wednesday night at the St. Jakob Stadium in Basel.
Fritz Walter and Ottmar Walter scored dual goals
Germany dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Hans Schäfer in the 31st minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Germans further widened their lead in the second period by scoring five times (Morlock '47, Walter '54/penalty, '64/penalty and Walter '61, '89).
