World Cup 1954 : Austria beats Uruguay 3-1 to claim World Cup third place
ZURICH, Jul. 3, 1954 (AMP) — Switzerland 54 : Austria secured the consolation of third place at the 1954 FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 win against Uruguay (halftime: 1-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Hardturm in Zurich.
Austrian forward Ernst Stojaspal opened the score in the 16th minute on penalty, before seeing Uruguay catch up in the 22nd minute thanks to Juan Hohberg. 1-1 at half time. The Austrians eventually won the game in the second period with two more goals by Cruz ('59 own) and Ocwirk ('89).
