BASEL, Jun. 23, 1954 (AMP) — Switzerland 54 : Switzerland qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1954 FIFA World Cup with a 4-1 win against Italy (halftime: 1-0) on Wednesday night at the St. Jakob Stadium in Basel.
Josef Hügi scored dual goals
Switzerland dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Josef Hügi in the 14th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Swisss further widened their lead in the second period by scoring three times (Ballaman '48, Hügi '85 and Fatton '90).
