Northern Ireland beats Czechoslovakia in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
MALMö, Jun. 17, 1958 (AMP) — Sweden 58 : Northern Ireland qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1958 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over Czechoslovakia (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Tuesday night at the Malmö Stadion in Malmö.
Peter McParland scored dual goals
The score was still 1-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Zdeněk Zikán ('18) for Czechoslovakia and Peter McParland ('44) for Northern Ireland, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 97th minute, it was ultimately the Irish striker Peter McParland who brought Northern Ireland to victory by scoring the winning goal.
