France beats Northern Ireland to advance to World Cup semifinals
NORRKöPING, Jun. 19, 1958 (AMP) — Sweden 58 : France reached the semifinals of the 1958 FIFA World Cup with a 4-0 win against Northern Ireland (halftime: 1-0) on Thursday night at Idrottsparken in Norrköping.
Just Fontaine scored dual goals
France dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Maryan Wisnieski in the 22nd minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Frenchs further widened their lead in the second period by scoring three times (Fontaine '55, '63 and Piantoni '68).
