USSR beats Hungary to advance to World Cup semifinals
SUNDERLAND, Jul. 23, 1966 (AMP) — England 66 : USSR reached the semifinals of the 1966 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win against Hungary (halftime: 1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Roker Park in Sunderland.
USSR dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by midfielder Igor Chislenko in the 5th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Soviets further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Porkujan in the 46th minute.
