World Cup 1966 : Portugal beats USSR 2-1 to claim World Cup third place
LONDON, Jul. 28, 1966 (AMP) — England 66 : Portugal secured the consolation of third place at the 1966 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win against USSR (halftime: 1-1) on Thursday night at Wembley Stadium.
Portuguese forward Eusébio opened the score in the 12th minute on penalty, before seeing USSR catch up in the 43rd minute thanks to Eduard Malofeyev. 1-1 at half time. The Portugueses eventually won the game in the second period with with a goal by Torres with one minute left in regular time.
