Germany beats England in extra time to advance to World Cup semifinals
LEóN, Jun. 14, 1970 (AMP) — Mexico 70 : Germany reached the semifinals of the 1970 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 3-2 extra time victory over England (following a 2-2 draw in regulation) on Sunday at the Estadio León.
The score was still 2-2 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Alan Mullery ('31) and Martin Peters ('49) for England and Franz Beckenbauer ('68) and Uwe Seeler ('82) for Germany, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 108th minute, it was ultimately the German striker Gerd Müller who brought Die Mannschaft to victory by scoring the winning goal.
