Italy beats Mexico to advance to World Cup semifinals
TOLUCA, Jun. 14, 1970 (AMP) — Mexico 70 : Italy reached the semifinals of the 1970 FIFA World Cup with a 4-1 win against Mexico (halftime: 1-1) on Sunday at the Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca.
Luigi Riva scored dual goals
Mexican midfielder José Luis González opened the score in the 13th minute, before seeing Italy catch up in the 25th minute thanks to Javier Guzmán own goal. 1-1 at half time. The Italians eventually won the game in the second period with three more goals by Riva ('63, '76) and Rivera ('70).
