Uruguay beats USSR in extra time to advance to World Cup semifinals

MEXICO CITY, Jun. 14, 1970 (AMP) — Mexico 70 : Uruguay reached the semifinals of the 1970 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 1-0 extra time victory over USSR (following a 0-0 draw in regulation) on Sunday at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The score was still nil-all after the 90 minutes of regulation time and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 117th minute, it was ultimately the Uruguayan midfielder Víctor Espárrago who brought La Celeste to victory by scoring the winning goal.
