Italy beats Germany in extra time to reach World Cup final

MEXICO CITY, Jun. 17, 1970 (AMP) — Mexico 70 : Italy reached the FIFA World Cup final for the third time in their history courtesy of a 4-3 extra time victory over Germany (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Wednesday afternoon at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The score was still 1-0 for Italy a minute from the end of regulation time, when an unexpected goal from Schnellinger allowed Germany to equalize and just squeeze through to overtime. The Italians finally broke through with goals from Burgnich ('98), Riva ('104) and Rivera ('111), while Müller ('94, '110) scored for Germany.
