World Cup 1978 : Brazil beats Italy 2-1 to claim World Cup third place
BUENOS AIRES, Jun. 24, 1978 (AMP) — Argentina 78 : Brazil secured the consolation of third place at the 1978 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win against Italy (halftime: 0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
Italy had started off well by taking the lead in the 38th minute with a goal by midfielder Franco Causio. Trailing 1-0 at half time, the Brazilians nonetheless manage to reverse the direction of the game by scoring twice in the second period (Nelinho '64 and Dirceu '71).
