BUENOS AIRES, Jun. 25, 1978 (AMP) — Argentina 78 : Argentina claimed the FIFA World Cup crown courtesy of a 3-1 extra time victory over the Netherlands (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) in the final on Sunday afternoon at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
Mario Kempes scored dual goals
The score was still 1-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Mario Kempes ('37) for Argentina and Dick Nanninga ('82) for the Netherlands, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. The Argentines finally broke through with goals from Kempes ('104) and Bertoni ('115).
