Yugoslavia beats Spain in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
VERONA, Jun. 26, 1990 (AMP) — Italy 90 : Yugoslavia qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over Spain (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Tuesday afternoon at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi in Verona.
Dragan Stojković scored dual goals
The score was still 1-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Dragan Stojković ('78) for Yugoslavia and Julio Salinas ('83) for Spain, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 92nd minute, it was ultimately the Yugoslav midfielder Dragan Stojković who brought Yugoslavia to victory by scoring the winning goal.
