England beats Cameroon in extra time to advance to World Cup semifinals
NAPLES, Jul. 1, 1990 (AMP) — Italy 90 : England reached the semifinals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 3-2 extra time victory over Cameroon (following a 2-2 draw in regulation) on Sunday night at the San Paolo Stadium in Naples.
Gary Lineker scored dual goals
The score was still 2-2 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from David Platt ('25) and Gary Lineker ('83 on penalty) for England and Emmanuel Kundé ('61 on penalty) and Eugène Ekéké ('65) for Cameroon, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 105th minute, it was ultimately the English striker Gary Lineker who brought the Three Lions to victory by scoring on penalty the winning goal.
