Italy beats Nigeria in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
FOXBOROUGH, Jul. 5, 1994 (AMP) — USA 94 : Italy qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over Nigeria (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Tuesday afternoon at the Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough.
Roberto Baggio scored dual goals
The score was still 1-0 for Nigeria two minutes from the end of regulation time, when an unexpected goal from Baggio allowed Italy to equalize and just squeeze through to overtime. In the 102nd minute, it was ultimately the Italian striker Roberto Baggio who brought the Azzurri to victory by scoring on penalty the winning goal.
