Spain beats Ireland in shoot out to reach World Cup quarterfinals
SUWON, Jun. 16, 2002 (AMP) — Korea Japan 2002 : Spain qualified to the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ireland 3-2 on penalties (after a 1-1 draw) on Sunday night at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.
The score was still 1-1 at the end of the regulation game time and overtime, after goals from Fernando Morientes ('8) for Spain and Robbie Keane ('90 on penalty) for Ireland. The Spaniards finally emerged the victors in the penalty shootout session by winning 3-2.
