South Korea beats Italy in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
DAEJEON, Jun. 18, 2002 (AMP) — Korea Japan 2002 : South Korea qualified to the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over Italy (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Tuesday night at the Daejeon World Cup Stadium.
The score was still 1-0 for Italy two minutes from the end of regulation time, when an unexpected goal from Ki-hyeon allowed South Korea to equalize and just squeeze through to overtime. In the 117th minute, it was ultimately the Korean striker Ahn Jung-hwan who brought South Korea to victory by scoring the winning goal.
