Argentina beats Mexico in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
LEIPZIG, Jun. 24, 2006 (AMP) — Germany 2006 : Argentina qualified to the quarter-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over Mexico (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Saturday night at the Zentralstadion in Leipzig.
The score was still 1-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Rafael Márquez ('6) for Mexico and Hernán Crespo ('10) for Argentina, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 98th minute, it was ultimately the Argentine midfielder Maxi Rodríguez who brought La Albiceleste to victory by scoring the winning goal.
