Italy beats France in shoot out to win 2006 World Cup
BERLIN, Jul. 9, 2006 (AMP) — Germany 2006 : Italy claimed a fourth FIFA World Cup crown after defeating France 5-3 on penalties (after a 1-1 draw) in the final on Sunday night at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
The score was still 1-1 at the end of the regulation game time and overtime, after goals from Zinédine Zidane ('7 on penalty) for France and Marco Materazzi ('19) for Italy. The Italians finally emerged the victors in the penalty shootout session by winning 5-3.
