Ghana beats USA in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
RUSTENBURG, Jun. 26, 2010 (AMP) — South Africa 2010 : Ghana qualified to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 extra time victory over the United States (following a 1-1 draw in regulation) on Saturday night at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.
The score was still 1-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Kevin-Prince Boateng ('5) for Ghana and Landon Donovan ('62 on penalty) for the United States, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. In the 93rd minute, it was ultimately the Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan who brought the Black Stars to victory by scoring the winning goal.
