Belgium beats USSR in extra time to reach World Cup quarterfinals
LEóN, Jun. 15, 1986 (AMP) — Mexico 86 : Belgium qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 4-3 extra time victory over USSR (following a 2-2 draw in regulation) on Sunday afternoon at the Estadio León.
The score was still 2-2 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Igor Belanov ('27, '70) for USSR and Enzo Scifo ('56) and Jan Ceulemans ('77) for Belgium, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. The Belgians finally broke through with goals from Demol ('102) and Claesen ('110), while Belanov ('111 on penalty) scored for USSR.
