Belgium beats Spain in shoot out to advance to World Cup semifinals
PUEBLA, Jun. 22, 1986 (AMP) — Mexico 86 : Belgium reached the semifinals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup after defeating Spain 5-4 on penalties (after a 1-1 draw) on Sunday afternoon at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla.
The score was still 1-1 at the end of the regulation game time and overtime, after goals from Jan Ceulemans ('35) for Belgium and Juan Antonio Señor ('85) for Spain. The Belgians finally emerged the victors in the penalty shootout session by winning 5-4.
