PUEBLA, Jun. 28, 1986 (AMP) — Mexico 86 : France secured the consolation of third place at the 1986 FIFA World Cup courtesy of a 4-2 extra time victory over Belgium (following a 2-2 draw in regulation) on Saturday at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla.

The score was still 2-2 after the 90 minutes of regulation time, after goals from Jan Ceulemans ('11) and Nico Claesen ('73) for Belgium and Jean-Marc Ferreri ('27) and Jean-Pierre Papin ('43) for France, and both teams had to wait for overtime to settle the issue. The Frenchs finally broke through with goals from Genghini ('104) and Amoros ('111 on penalty).
