Argentina beats England in shoot out to reach World Cup quarterfinals
SAINT-ÉTIENNE, Jun. 30, 1998 (AMP) — France 98 : Argentina qualified to the quarter-finals of the 1998 FIFA World Cup after defeating England 4-3 on penalties (after a 2-2 draw) on Tuesday night at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne.
The score was still 2-2 at the end of the regulation game time and overtime, after goals from Gabriel Batistuta ('6 on penalty) and Javier Zanetti ('45) for Argentina and Alan Shearer ('10 on penalty) and Michael Owen ('16) for England. The Argentines finally emerged the victors in the penalty shootout session by winning 4-3.
