SAN CRISTOBAL, Oct. 9, 1996 (AMP) — France 98 (South American Qualifiers) : Argentina defeated Venezuela by a score of 5-2 (halftime: 1-1), in a qualifying game for the 1998 FIFA World Cup (Qualifying Tournament) on Wednesday night.

The result put the Argentine third in the group with 8 points. Venezuela is bottom with one point. In their next game, Argentina will meet Chile on December 15, while Venezuela will face Peru.
