SYDNEY, Mar. 28, 2017 (AMP) — Russia 2018 (Asian Qualifiers) : Australia defeated the United Arab Emirates by a score of 2-0 (halftime: 1-0), in a qualifying game for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Australia dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by Irvine in the 7th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Australians further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Leckie in the 78th minute.
The result put the Australians third in Group B with 13 points. UAE is fourth with 9 points. In their next game, Australia will meet second-placed Saudi Arabia at the Sydney Football Stadium on June 8, while the United Arab Emirates will face Thailand.
