LAUSANNE, Jun. 17, 1954 (AMP) — Switzerland 54 : Switzerland defeated Italy by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 1-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Thursday afternoon at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne.
Swiss forward Robert Ballaman opened the score in the 18th minute, before seeing Italy catch up in the 44th minute thanks to Giampiero Boniperti. 1-1 at half time. The Swisss eventually won the game in the second period with with a goal by Hügi in the 78th minute.
The result put the Swiss top of Group 4 with 2 points. In their last game, Switzerland will meet England at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise on June 20, while Italy will face Belgium.
