BUENOS AIRES, Jun. 3, 1978 (AMP) — Argentina 78 : Austria defeated Spain by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 1-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Saturday afternoon at the José Amalfitani Stadium in Buenos Aires.
Austrian forward Walter Schachner opened the score in the 10th minute, before seeing Spain catch up in the 21st minute thanks to Dani. 1-1 at half time. The Austrians eventually won the game in the second period with with a goal by Krankl in the 76th minute.
The result put the Austrians top of Group C with 2 points. In their next game, Austria will meet second-placed Sweden at the José Amalfitani Stadium on June 7, while Spain will face Brazil.
