SYDNEY, Jun. 19, 1997 (AMP) — France 98 (Oceania Qualifiers) : Australia defeated Tahiti by a score of 2-0 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup qualifying game on Thursday night. Australia advance to the next round of the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The result put the Australians top of Group 1 with 12 points. Tahiti is bottom with no points.
