HONIARA, Jun. 4, 2012 (AMP) — Solomon 2012 : New Zealand defeated Papua New Guinea by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 1-0), in a OFC Nations Cup group stage game on Monday at the Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara.
New Zealand dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Shane Smeltz in the 2nd minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the New Zealanders further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Wood in the 52nd minute.
The result put the New Zealander top of Group B with 6 points. Papua New Guinea is bottom with no points. In their last game, New Zealand will meet second-placed the Solomon Islands at the Lawson Tama Stadium on June 6, while Papua New Guinea will face the Fiji.
