PUEBLA, Jun. 2, 1970 (AMP) — Mexico 70 : Uruguay defeated Israel by a score of 2-0 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Tuesday afternoon at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla.
Uruguay dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by midfielder Ildo Maneiro in the 23rd minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Uruguayans further widened their lead in the second period with a goal by Mujica in the 50th minute.
The result put the Uruguayans top of Group 2 with 2 points. In their next game, Uruguay will meet Italy at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc on June 6, while Israel will face Sweden.
