World Cup 1958 : Argentina beats Northern Ireland 3-1
HALMSTAD, Jun. 11, 1958 (AMP) — Sweden 58 : Argentina defeated Northern Ireland by a score of 3-1 (halftime: 1-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Wednesday night at Örjans Vall in Halmstad.
Irish forward Peter McParland opened the score in the 4th minute, before seeing Argentina catch up in the 37th minute thanks to Omar Oreste Corbatta penalty kick. 1-1 at half time. The Argentines eventually won the game in the second period with two more goals by Menéndez ('56) and Avio ('60).
The result put the Argentine second in Group 1 with 2 points. Northern Ireland is third with 2 points. In their last game, Argentina will meet Czechoslovakia at Örjans Vall on June 15, while Northern Ireland will face Germany.
