World Cup 1958 : USSR and England tied at 2-2
GOTHENBURG, Jun. 8, 1958 (AMP) — Sweden 58 : USSR tied 2-2 with England (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Sunday night at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg.
The Soviets started off well by taking the lead thanks to Soviet forward Nikita Simonyan in the 13th minute. However, even though they were leading 1-0 at half time, and despite Ivanov goal ('56) in the second period, they could not prevent a comeback by England with goals by Derek Kevan ('66) and Tom Finney ('85 on penalty).
The result left both teams tied in the second place of Group 4 with one point. In their next game, England will meet group leaders Brazil at the Ullevi Stadium on June 11, while USSR will face Austria.
