SHEFFIELD, Jul. 15, 1966 (AMP) — England 66 : Spain defeated Switzerland by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 0-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Friday night at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield.
Switzerland had started off well by taking the lead in the 31st minute with a goal by forward René-Pierre Quentin. Trailing 1-0 at half time, the Spaniards nonetheless manage to reverse the direction of the game by scoring twice in the second period (Sanchís '57 and Amancio '75).
The result put the Spaniard third in Group 2 with 2 points. Switzerland is bottom with no points. In their last game, Spain will meet group leaders Germany at the Hillsborough Stadium on July 20, while Switzerland will face Argentina.
