Germany beats Spain to reach World Cup quarterfinals
BIRMINGHAM, Jul. 20, 1966 (AMP) — England 66 : Germany defeated Spain by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 1-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Wednesday night at Villa Park in Birmingham.
Spanish forward Josep Maria Fusté opened the score in the 23rd minute, before seeing Germany catch up in the 39th minute thanks to Lothar Emmerich. 1-1 at half time. The Germans eventually won the game in the second period with with a goal by Seeler with just 6 minutes remaining in regulation time.
