MEXICO CITY, Jun. 6, 1970 (AMP) — Mexico 70 : USSR defeated Belgium by a score of 4-1 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Saturday afternoon at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Anatoliy Byshovets scored dual goals
USSR dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Anatoliy Byshovets in the 14th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Soviets further widened their lead in the second period by scoring three times (Asatiani '57, Byshovets '63 and Khmelnytskyi '76).
The result put the Soviet top of Group 1 with 3 points. Belgium is second with 2 points. In their last game, USSR will meet El Salvador at the Estadio Azteca on June 10, while Belgium will face Mexico.
