MEXICO CITY, Jun. 7, 1970 (AMP) — Mexico 70 : Mexico defeated El Salvador by a big score of 4-0 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Sunday at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Javier Valdivia scored dual goals
Mexico dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Javier Valdivia in the 45th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Mexicans further widened their lead in the second period by scoring three times (Valdivia '46, Fragoso '58 and Juan Ignacio Basaguren '83).
The result put the Mexicans top of Group 1 with 3 points. El Salvador is bottom with no points. In their last game, Mexico will meet third-placed Belgium at the Estadio Azteca on June 11, while El Salvador will face USSR.
