World Cup 1998 : Nigeria beats Spain 3-2
NANTES, Jun. 13, 1998 (AMP) — France 98 : Nigeria defeated Spain by a score of 3-2 (halftime: 1-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Saturday afternoon at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes.
Spanish defender Fernando Hierro opened the score in the 20th minute, before seeing Nigeria catch up in the 24th minute thanks to Mutiu Adepoju. 1-1 at half time. The Nigerians eventually won the game in the second period with two more goals by Zubizarreta ('73 own) and Oliseh ('77).
The result put the Nigerians top of Group D with 3 points. In their next game, Nigeria will meet second-placed Bulgaria at the Stade de la Beaujoire on June 19, while Spain will face Paraguay.
