AUCKLAND, Jul. 8, 2002 (AMP) — New Zealand 2002 : Australia defeated New Caledonia by a big score of 11-0 (halftime: 5-0), in a OFC Nations Cup group stage game on Monday at the Ericsson Stadium in Auckland.
Despotovski served up another goal feast
Australia dominated the first half thanks to goals from Despotovski ('2), Horvat ('15), Chipperfield ('22, '35) and Mori ('34). Leading 5-0 at the break, the Australians further widened their lead in the second period by scoring six times (Despotovski '56/penalty, '76, '77, Costanzo '83, Porter '86 and Trimboli '90).
The result put the Australians top of Group A with 6 points. New Caledonia is bottom with no points. In their last game, Australia will meet second-placed the Fiji at the Ericsson Stadium on July 10, while New Caledonia will face Vanuatu.
