GWANGJU, Jun. 2, 2002 (AMP) — Korea Japan 2002 : Spain defeated Slovenia by a score of 3-1 (halftime: 1-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Sunday night at the Gwangju World Cup Stadium.
Spain dominated the first half thanks to a goal scored by forward Raúl in the 44th minute. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Spaniards further widened their lead in the second period by scoring twice (Juan Carlos Valerón '74 and Hierro '87/penalty).
The result put the Spaniard top of Group B with 3 points. In their next game, Spain will meet second-placed Paraguay at the Gwangju World Cup Stadium on June 7, while Slovenia will face South Africa.
