JEONJU, Jun. 7, 2002 (AMP) — Korea Japan 2002 : Spain defeated Paraguay by a score of 3-1 (halftime: 0-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Friday night at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.
Fernando Morientes scored dual goals
Paraguay had started off well by taking the lead in the 10th minute with an own goal by defender Carles Puyol. Trailing 1-0 at half time, the Spaniards nonetheless manage to reverse the direction of the game by scoring three times in the second period (Morientes '53, '69 and Hierro '83 on penalty).
The result put the Spaniard top of Group B with 6 points. Paraguay is third with one point. In their last game, Spain will meet second-placed South Africa at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium on June 12, while Paraguay will face Slovenia.
