KASHIMA, Jun. 8, 2002 (AMP) — Korea Japan 2002 : Croatia defeated Italy by a score of 2-1 (halftime: 0-0), in a World Cup group stage game on Saturday night at the Kashima Soccer Stadium.

Both teams held off against each other during the first 45 minutes of the game. 0-0 at half time. Everything was decided in the second period with goals by Olić ('73) and Rapaić ('76).

The result put the Italians top of Group G with 3 points. Croatia is third with 3 points. In their last game, Italy will meet second-placed Mexico at the Kashima Soccer Stadium on June 13, while Croatia will face Ecuador.
