SALVADOR, Jun. 13, 2014 (AMP) — Brazil 2014 : The Netherlands defeated Spain by a big score of 5-1 (halftime: 1-1), in a World Cup group stage game on Friday afternoon at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.
Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben scored dual goals
Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso opened the score in the 27th minute on penalty, before seeing the Netherlands catch up in the 44th minute thanks to Robin van Persie. 1-1 at half time. The Dutchs eventually won the game in the second period with four more goals by Robben ('53, '80), Stefan de Vrij ('65) and Robin van Persie ('72).
The result put the Dutch top of Group B with 3 points. In their next game, the Netherlands will meet Australia at the Arena Fonte Nova on June 18, while Spain will face Chile.
